New Local Food Fund to Award $10,000 in Grants

(June 15, 2010) Local Food NS is pleased to announce that its first grant program is now accepting applications. The fund will provide grants to community-based organizations with the aim to strengthen the local food system in Nova Scotia.

"We envision a future for Nova Scotia where rich top soil, clean air and water, resilient farm and fishing communities and a secure, healthy, local food supply is available for all citizens. It is crucial to engage and inspire all Nova Scotians to celebrate this inheritance for future generations," explains Dr. Ralph Martin, Chair of Local Food NS and a Professor at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.

The announcement of the 2010 granting program marks a significant milestone. The new fund is the only charitable funding source in the province with a mandate dedicated to healthy local food issues.

This year, $10,000 (ten thousand dollars) will be awarded to successful applicants. Interested groups are invited to download an application form. The application deadline is July 31st, 2010. Grants will be awarded in September.
